Get the Guide: The Art and History of Terrazzo

Marble, Diamonds and Goat's Milk

Marble, diamonds and goat’s milk. Yes, you read that right. All three play an important role in the history of terrazzo. But first, a little background.

Terrazzo is a composite material of marble chippings set into cement and it originated in 16th-century Italy (Venice to be exact) as a way to reuse marble stone offcuts which were usually discarded.

It is either poured in situ by hand or precast into blocks that can be cut to size. Today’s highly evolved terrazzo is an environmentally friendly material that combines extraordinary design potential, optimum durability, and low maintenance, which is exactly why we love terrazzo for sculptures and statues.

So, how do goat's milk and diamonds fit into all of this? Goat milk was used as the first sealant for terrazzo after it was discovered that it brought the rich colours out of the marble and created a glossy, protective layer. It was used for centuries until more modern sealants came along.

As for diamonds, the story is a little longer. Between 1900 and 1915, three million Italians immigrated to the United States to work as terrazzo and mosaic workers. They were called the terazzeri. The wonders of their craft were guarded with utmost secrecy, with skills and knowledge passed down from generation to generation.

Architects in the ‘20s were the first to recognise the vast design potential of terrazzo and before long, it was the most popular option for flooring in the US. Its popularity exploded the world over, with wealthy tycoons choosing to lay not just marbles but glass, semi-precious stones and even diamonds in their terrazzo! Certainly a long way from the humble beginnings of terrazzo in impoverished Venetian homes.

Today, terrazzo is more popular than ever due to its everlasting style, versatility, and durability.
