Long Weekend DIY Landscaping Projects

If you're not planning a getaway, long weekends offer an excellent opportunity to dive into landscaping projects that can transform your garden. Whether you're looking to enhance your outdoor space or prepare it for the seasons ahead, here's a three-part guide to help you make the most of the extra time at home.

Pebble Cover for Drains & Grates

Using pebbles to cover drains not only enhances the aesthetic of your garden but also improves functionality by allowing water to pass through while blocking organic matter like leaves.

  1. Choose pebbles that complement your outdoor space. Clean the drain area to ensure it's free of debris.

  2. If using smaller pebbles, consider placing a mesh or landscape fabric over the drain to prevent them from entering.

  3. Arrange the pebbles over the drain. Ensure they are spread evenly and cover the area thoroughly to prevent leaves and other debris from clogging the drain while still allowing water flow.

  4. Conduct a water flow test to ensure the pebbles are effectively allowing water through and not obstructing the drain. Regular maintenance will keep the drain clear and functional.

Pebble Cover for Bare Garden Areas

  1. Identify bare areas in your garden that could benefit from a pebble cover, such as around plants or along pathways.

  2. Select pebbles that complement your garden's style and colour scheme.

  3. Prepare the area by removing weeds and debris, and lay down a weed-suppressing membrane.

  4. Spread a 5 cm layer of pebbles evenly over the membrane, ensuring a neat finish.

At Stone & Water World, we have a wide range of pebbles in-store. From black lava pebble, to polished pebble, autumn harvest and more.

Stepping Stone Path

  1. Choose high-traffic areas in your garden that are prone to mud and mess during autumn and winter.

  2. Plan the path layout, spacing the stepping stones about 30 cm apart for comfortable walking.

  3. Excavate a shallow hole for each stepping stone, approximately 5 cm deep.

  4. Fill the hole with a 2cm layer of sand, level it, and set the stepping stone in place. Adjust as needed for stability.

  5. Decorate the surroundings with a pebble or gravel of your choice for a stylish look.

Plant Spring-Flowering Aquatic Plants (August through March)

  1. Select spring-flowering aquatic plants, such as water lilies or iris, that will provide a stunning show in early spring.

  2. Prepare the planting area in your pond or water feature, ensuring the right depth and conditions for each plant species.

  3. Plant the aquatic plants according to their specific requirements, taking care to space them appropriately for optimal growth.

  4. Monitor the plants as the season progresses, providing any necessary care to ensure a healthy and vibrant display come spring.
